Tatanan and the Musketeers were the only people who knew about the existence of the twin brothers, and Fuquay used his influence to silence everyone. The main line of the story has changed, portraying Louis XIV as a selfish, cruel, and incompetent person, while Philip is a kind-hearted brother raised by Tatanan and the Musketeers, unaware that he even has identical twins. When the truth was discovered, Louis XIV imprisoned Philip wearing an iron mask, hoping that Philip's beard could grow inside the mask and ultimately strangle him.
